History:
Tequila Mockingbird Mexican Restaurant in New Canaan, CT

Tequila was started in 1993 by Paul Mauk, who was originally from Colorado and had grown up with Mexican friends, he always loved the Mexican food he was raised with. The restaurant came about as a result of his background. Needless to say it has evolved over the years. We started out with more of a Southwestern slant, and slowly moved into a regional Mexican style of food over the years. Paul attended a Master Chef program in traditional Mexican foods as well as classes in “Alta Cocina” at Culinario Ambrosia in Mexico City in the fall of 2008. The following summer we had one of the instructors from the school spend the summer in our kitchen sharing his knowledge with our guys.

Our staff is made up of people from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia, Brazil and the good old USA. The majority of our waitstaff as well as our kitchen staff has been with us for many years. The chef in the kitchen has worked here for 16 years in a variety of positions, the busboys 15 years, so we have evolved a family, which is unique for this business. In summer of 2012 we received certification for our “expertise in Tequila and its culture” from the CRT which is the Regulatory council of Tequila made up of a combination of Tequila producers and Mexican Government regulators. We are very proud of this award. At that time we were one of 20 restaurants in the United States to receive their certification.

All of our bartenders have attended “Tequila school” in the town of Tequila, in Jalisco, Mexico. And our entire staff has been through classes provided by the Mexican Government. We love Tequila and do our best to share our knowledge of the drink with all those who have an interest. Our food is made with traditional ingredients when possible, we import all of our dried chiles, as well as most of our fresh chiles. The majority of our produce, comes to us weekly from Mexico. We buy our beef at the market in New York, with the exception of some of our pork comes to us from our friend John Ubaldo, who pasture raise's Berkshire pigs at his farm in Cambridge NY. The “Daily Specials” tend to reflect Paul,s experience from Culinary school in Mexico, with them, we generally try to offer something that is not on most Mexican restaurant menus.

That is the basic story of Tequila, As with most restaurants there are thousands of little story's and people who have helped shape the character and style of the place. We sincerely hope that all of our story's and people help to make your time at Tequila a good one.  .

From I-95 Southbound:
Take exit 15 (Rt. 7 exit) to the Merritt Parkway South. Take the Merritt Parkway to exit 38. (Rt. 123) make a left going north on Rt. 123. Go to the 2nd traffic light and make a left onto Rt. 106. Follow Rt. 106 to the 2nd traffic light and take the first right onto Forest St. (Athletic Shoe) on the corner. Gates/Tequila on your left.

From I-95 Northbound:
Take exit 13. Make a left at the light. Make a right a next st. West Norwalk Rd. (Corner of Pancake House) Follow straight through for about 4 miles. You will cross over the Merritt Parkway. This is now New Canaan. Continue straight until you reach town. (now Main St.). At the 2nd light go right then immediately bear left onto a one way street (Forest). Gates/Tequila on your left.

From New Haven on Merritt Parkway:
Take exit 38 (Rt. 123) make a left going north on Rt. 123. Go to the 2nd traffic light and make a left onto Rt. 106. Follow Rt. 106 to the 2nd traffic light and take the first right onto Forest St. (Athletic Shoe) on the corner. Gates/Tequila on your left.

From New York on Merritt Parkway:
Take exit 37 at of the ramp make a left. Go to the 3rd traffic light make a right onto Cherry St. Go to the next light make a left onto Main St. Go to next light make a right then immediately bear left onto a one way street (Forest). Gates/Tequila on your left.

From Norwalk:
Follow Rt. 123 North. After the Merritt Parkway go to the 2nd traffic light and make a left onto Rt. 106. Follow Rt. 106 to the 2nd traffic light and take the first right onto Forest St. (Athletic Shoe) on the corner. Gates/Tequila on your left.

From Darien:
Follow Rt. 124 to New Canaan. Make a right onto Cherry St. Go to the next light make a left onto Main St. Go to next light make a right then immediately bear left onto a one way street (Forest). Gates/Tequila on your left.

From Ridgefield:
Follow Rt. 35 to Rt. 123 to the intersection of Rt. 106. Take a right onto Rt. 106 and follow to the 2nd traffic light. Take a right onto Forest St. Gates/Tequila on your left.

From Bedford, N.Y.:
Proceed to Scotts Corners Pound Ridge. Stay on Rt. 124 and follow all the way to New Canaan. When you come to the traffic light go straight. (N.C. Fire House on left). There is an entrance on Main St. (Rt. 124) just down from the Fire House on your left. A green awning next to the Studio Antique Shop.
