The town of New Hartford offers an eclectically diverse mix of outdoors activity, industry, and craftwork.  Satan’s Kingdom, originally named for the bandits who hid out there, is a series of gorges on the Farmington, where you can float down a two and a half mile stretch of that river at a relaxed but sometimes hectic pace.  A real Connecticut summer tradition. Then there is West Hill Pond, actually a hilltop lake which gives anglers one of the best shots to net trout in the state.  And in the winter, we have Ski Sundown, which provides one of Connecticut’s few downhill and cross country ski areas. Heading into New Hartford’s center, on Main Street, you can browse New Hartford Junction’s vast array of refreshing updated folk art and crafts that contain a real sense of personal expression. Nearby are Muddy Moose Antiques and the highly rated Chatterley’s Restaurant, as well as other restaurants and antique stores – enough to keep you busy and fed on a weekend or vacation day. And now for a New Hartford “industry” which appropriately combines science and art, Ovation Guitars.  The brainchild of helicopter creative wizard Charles Kamen, the Ovation round backed acoustic / electric with built-in pickup revolutionized the music world, utilizing longtime guitarist Kamen’s extensive helicopter blade experience to produce more rather than fewer vibrations. This aerospace “music of the spheres” operation resides in a modest brick building amongst other makers of less glamorous products like coil springs, and metalwork, all operating in tandem like a Northwest Connecticut clock to keep New Hartford vibrating.
