"The Land of the Sleeping Giant"

This nickname refers to the remarkable series of hills whose forested contours absolutely depict  the head, chest, legs and feet of a – what else could you call it – giant!  But there is an American giant whose creative memory walks tall in Hamden and that is Eli Whitney.  Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin after trip to the land of same, failed to profit from his 1794 patented device (#72X) which economically legitimized a declining slave system.  The southern planters had simply made copies of their own.  “He can make anything” Whitney the production system at his Hamden firearms factory. The Eli Whitney Museum is on none other than Whitney Avenue. When driving up Dixwell Avenue into Hamden from adjoining New Haven the cityscape still surrounds.  But keep going a few miles and there are thirty two miles to hike in Sleeping Giant, twenty three on the Quinnipiac Trail, and another six plus on the Regicides Trail following the crest of the West Rock Ridge. The former Farmington Canal has become a well walked and bicycled route that passes the old waterway’s well preserved locks. At the foot of the giant is Quinnipiac University which is so brightly multi-faceted, that it never sleeps at all.  Of particular interest at this highly ranked school is the  Quinnipiac University Polling Institute whose results consistently pop up in the national press. To be sure, Father Eli would be proud.
